From Burnout to Balance: A Mom's Guide to Finding Joy in Fitness

Are you feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and disconnected from your fitness goals?

It’s a common feeling for moms to experience this. Many women juggle busy lives, different roles, and multiple responsibilities, and due to this, they experience burnout.

They find it very difficult to put in time, and effort, and make sacrifices for their fitness when they’re feeling burnout. But understanding the cause of this burnout and overwhelm can be the first step to taking back control of your life and experiencing a balanced and fulfilling fitness journey!

Here are 4 reasons why you may be experiencing burnout, and how to shift towards a more balanced and fulfilling approach to living a more joyful life as a mum, while making fitness progress…

Unrealistic Expectations

Setting high expectations for your fitness and other responsibilities you have that you struggle to achieve may lead to stress and disappointment.

You may be pursuing perfection, and it can cause you to lose sight of the joy of movement and your journey. Maybe you're comparing your journey to others and you're setting your expectations based on their journey. This will only lead to you feeling frustrated and upset with your progress.

Recovery

A lack of recovery and pushing yourself too hard without allowing for proper rest can lead to physical burnout. Not to mention the risk of injury and decrease in enjoyment of fitness and your journey.

This will make it SO much harder to remain motivated and accountable, especially if you don’t have a support system behind you or an accountability partner.

Not recovering fully or properly will cause a lack of enthusiasm for your workouts.

Disconnection

When your fitness journey and workouts aren’t aligned with your personal values and desires, you can easily burn out. I recommend engaging in workouts that resonate and align with what truly matters to you.

Doing the opposite can drain your enthusiasm and motivation and lead you to feeling unfulfilled and question your “Why” for the reason you’re even exercising!

Pressure & Comparison

Comparing yourself to others and feeling pressure to obey social norms of fitness can make your journey feel like a chore. Plus, this may misalign your fitness activities with what truly matters to you, disconnecting you from your journey.

Feeling demotivated, overwhelmed, and anxious because of other people's journeys can be very harmful

Here are 3 Ways to Experience Balance & Fulfilment Instead

Progress

Continuous improvement and progress beats striving for perfection every time. Shift your mindset and celebrate each milestone you achieve no matter how small it seems.

Appreciate the journey, because perfection is unattainable, and you’ll burn yourself out by striving for it.

Variety

Regularly mix up your workouts to try and find new fitness activities that excite you, make you feel good, and that you look forward to.

Try out new classes, or sports, experiment with new exercises, and ignore social norms that advise you to follow a particular path. Find things that bring you joy and excitement and work out with different people now and then.

Alignment

Reflect on what fitness means to you, and your “Why” for exercising. Set goals which resonate with your why, and your values and passions.

Don’t follow trends, or social norms, or compare yourself to others, focus on what brings YOU joy and excitement. Your goals should align with your values and passions.

Living in alignment with your true desires gives you so much fulfillment, making your fitness journey enjoyable and motivating.

Conclusion

Fitness burnout for moms is a common challenge for many women, but it doesn’t have to prevent you from a successful fitness journey.

I hope this blog helps you overcome feelings of overwhelm and burnout and helps you make a shift towards a more balanced and fulfilling fitness experience.
